This spring we have been including games and other Community Builders each week as a part of our Stories & Rituals youth group curriculum. You can learn more about the curriculum here, but below you can find a few of the best games we've used!
Before you play the game, write a bunch of random words on slips of paper. Vary the types of words: nouns, verbs, adjectives, etc. Fold up these slips of paper and place them in a bowl.
Start the game by telling the group that you are going to create a group story, and each person will be contributing a sentence to your creation. You will go around the circle and each person will have a turn. When it is one person’s turn, they will pick a slip of paper from the bowl. On that slip of paper is a word. They will need to incorporate that word into their sentence.
As the leader, start by picking a word out of the bowl. Use that word to create the opening sentence of the story. Then, go around the circle and have each person pick out a word and add a sentence to the story using that word. Continue until each person has been able to contribute to the story.

This Little Light of Mine
Make your room as dark as possible. Cover windows (or close blinds/curtains) and make sure you can turn off the lights. Then, divide your group into two teams. Assign each team to a “wall” (make sure the walls don’t have much on them… it will make the game hard) and give them a flashlight. The teams should be facing opposing walls.
Each team will rotate one player each round. For each round, the one selected player will be the “designated drawer” for the team. The drawer’s job is to draw their assigned picture on the wall with the flashlight.
Invite the designated drawers to come to you. Give them the same thing to draw (only one thing; it could be an animal, object… anything!) and have them draw the picture for their team. Their team members must try to guess what the drawer is drawing. The team to correctly guess the picture first gets a point.
Play as many rounds of the game as time allows. You may wish to switch up the game by timing teams to see how many pictures they can guess in one minute.
