Team builders work best when you do the activity as a group, then process the activity together. As a group, talk about what made the activity easy and what made it difficult, and what lessons the group may have learned from the experience. Team builders are most effective when the group understands why they participated in the activity.
Here are some team building games to try with your youth group!
The Egg Drop
This messy, yet classic and engaging problem solving activity requires splitting the room into two large groups with the task of building an egg package that can sustain an eight foot drop. A variety of tools and other materials should be provided to the teams. After the packages have been built, each team must also present a 30-second advertisement for their package, highlighting why it’s unique and how it works. At the conclusion of the presentations, each group will have to drop their egg using their package to see if it really works. Aside from teaching the groups to work together and communicate, it also brings them together with the common goal of both winning the egg drop and successfully creating an egg package.
Materials: Random materials and objects to create egg drop packages; eggs
Each group must transport a bucket of “toxic waste” from the starting line to the “neutralization bucket.”They may not touch the bucket but instead must use a rope and a bungee cord.
Materials: Bucket of water, empty bucket, rope, bungee cord
Walk This Way
Everyone stands in a room leaving a path through the middle of the group. One person at a time walks or dances through the path from one end to the other. Each person in turn must follow, but each walk or dance step must be different than any that have been done before.
The Office of Youth Ministry has a bank of many, many other team builders you can try with your group. We can even come to your parish (or you can come to us) and we can lead a team building session for you!
