Works best with large groups, but always very entertaining! Divide students into 4 groups. Tell each group that, when their turn comes, they must sing a lyric to a song that has a designated word in it. Choose a fairly common word (i.e. Love, Friend, Eye, Blue, Sun). After the leaders says, “Go”, the first group has 10 seconds to come up with a song. After their turn, the next group must come up with a new song that includes the same word. Keep going from group to group. If a group cannot come up with a song lyric after 10 seconds, they are out. Repeating a previously sung song means your group is out too! Last group left is the winner. Word of warning: To ensure equal participation from all group members, emphasize that each group must sing the song in unison. One person cannot carry a team, even if they are the one with the best singing voice.
The Color Game
This one is perfect for long rides, and can easily be played in a car or bus. It can also be used as a quick filler game if there is downtime at a meeting or event. The leader starts by stating a color. Go around the room (or vehicle) as fast as you can for each person to name something that is that color. Allow no more than three seconds to think. If a person cannot name something, s/he is out of that round. Play until you have a winner for each color.
A great improv game that helps teach creativity and teamwork. Select two members of your group and tell them they are going to act out a brief scene. Give them the basic framework for the scene; i.e. they are two friends walking to school together, or a parent and child grocery shopping, or something similarly simple. Once the basic scene has been established, tell the performers that they must perform the scene with each sentence starting with successive letters of the alphabet. For example, the scene could go like this:
-"Are you going to the party tonight?”
-"Being social sounds like too much effort.”
-"Can’t you ever have fun?”
Continue the scene in this manner for a few minutes, then give another pair a turn.
